MONDAY 9th July
Akropoditi Dance Center
The duet deals with the challenges and fragments of thought and memory of two characters who live in a world that is not necessarily physical, part of which exists only in their minds. They want to help one another, to bolster one another, to succeed together- however, their journey together is wrought with solitude. Suddenly it is unclear where they are going and why. Good intentions are engulfed by vast confusion.
Painful memories become funny, fantasies become reality, and reality becomes slippery and inconsistent. At times, they snuggle into the past, living in an alternate reality and taking on new roles, until something awakens them.
For a moment, they are aware of the impending end but after a moment they are young again, with all the time in the world. At times, they are together in this parallel reality and at times each experiences a different life. It is only in the physical world that they are a couple, a team. They give one another the strength to live and perhaps to die. They are unconsciously dependent. Supporting, encouraging and uplifting. Dragging down and once again lifting up.
For years, they have lived within the borders they are used to but now the borders are constantly moving, disappearing and returning. Do I have to be careful not to cross the boundary? What is on the other side? Or is the border I see the one I crossed long ago and need to return to? They are looking for a way out of a lived maze that is constantly changing.
Occasionally, doubt sneaks into one of the characters, what will happen if my partner disappears? Occasionally, the other is frozen in fear, will my partner be there tomorrow? Sometimes it seems they are living in a traitorous and misleading world, with no one left to trust. One’s role in the other’s life is no longer clear. A couple on a journey, drowning in a reality that teeters on the shores of sanity. What is left of me, us? Who is this person beside me?
